The contributions of Ramon y Cajal and other Spanish authors to hypnosis.

2008

The authors review the most important Spanish contributions to hypnosis during the 19th and 20th centuries, with emphasis on the work of Santiago Ramon y Cajal, winner of the 1906 Nobel Prize in medicine. It is widely accepted that he provided a basic foundation for modern neurosciences with his work on neuronal staining and synaptic transmission. What is missing in most accounts of his work is his longstanding interest and work on hypnosis and anomalous phenomena. This article summarizes that lost legacy, discusses other Spanish hypnosis pioneers and gives a brief overview of current hypnosis activities in Spain.

W cieniu wielkiej polityki. Obraz 100 lat samorządu terytorialnego w Polsce na gruncie współczesnej szkolne edukacji historycznej. Casus podręczników…

2019

The aim of the article is to present the image of local government in the his-tory of Poland in the 20th century, in terms of the latest school history textbooks. For the purpose of the analysis, eight studies have been selected, which since September 2012 have been taught in Polish secondary schools. The image of the title issue emerging from the analysis indicates that the marginal treatment of the role and signifi cance of local government in relation to the period of the Second Republic of Poland is clearly visible. More information on self-government can be found in the handbooks that refer to the period of the People’s Republic of Poland and the most recent history of Poland, i.e. the…

2019

The Sicilian Mafia is a criminal organisation founded in Sicily which is an island south of the Italian mainland in the Mediterranean Sea. Until recently, this organization was responsible for many murders and bombings. However, recently, based on the investigations known as the “Mare Nostrum” operation, the Supreme Court convicted 67 people and sent them to prison. Some defendants were found guilty of as many as 39 murders. This article reviews the forensic analysis that was used when investigating responsibility for these Mafia murders. Our review is based on the court documents and the ballistic investigations which were carried out to evaluate the reliability of “repented” or “pentiti”…

"Dżafar z Bagdadu" Janusza Makarczyka jako cenne źródło wiedzy o historii i literaturze arabskiej epoki Abbasydów

2018

This article deals with Janusz Makarczyk’s bestselling historical romance Jafar of Baghdad, first published in 1950. Makarczyk had a varied career as a journalist, travel writer of the ‘globtrotter school’, military officer, diplomat and academic; his deep involvement with the Middle East and Arab history began in the 1926 when he was sent to the Polish consulate in Jerusalem. The life of Jafar ibn Yahya provided him not only with enough material for a gripping story of love and romance but also a pretext for painting a broad canvas of historical events and personages. Addressed to younger readers, the book is didactic in the sense that it offers them basic information about Islam (e.g. the…

Parental effects on offspring longevity--evidence from 17th to 19th century reproductive histories.

2004

Family studies provide support for a modest genetic influence on offspring life span, although the magnitude of these correlations is small. The study aimed to clarify the relative contributions of parental age at birth and overall parental longevity on offspring lifespan, and to identify the biological and cultural mechanisms.Information was derived from two village genealogies (1650-1927) encompassing 9979 births (5315 males, 4664 females). Data selection was guided by the inclusion of information about parental age at birth and lifespan, offspring lifespan and cohort-specific life expectancy.Parental age at reproduction displayed a negative association with offspring survivability, which …
